AEA Head Expects to Control GOP!
- Says he has given a million dollars to GOP candidates
- Feels someone is biting the hand extended with checks in it
- Wants GOP Chair to halt ads he finds distasteful
Here is a recording of Dr. Paul Hubbert, Executive Secretary of the Alabama Education Association, speaking to an interviewer for AlaNews on October 28, 2002. Dr. Hubbert is complaining about ads being run by the Alabama Federation of Republican Women in the election which was just days away.
He was surprisingly candid in his remarks. He said, in effect, that he had bought the Republican Party by making a million dollars in campaign contributions, and he thought that entitled him to say which ads the GOP may and may not run.

A transcript of the recording follows:
Dr. Paul Hubbert: Well, I understand last week the-- some group in the Republican Party was running an attack ad on the Alabama Education Association, and so I called the Chair of the Republican Party and reminded him that we had made substantial contributions, in fact, over a million dollars to their candidates. And suggested to him that he ought to look into it. He indicated he knew nothing about the ads but would be in contact with the national Party. And as I reminded him, you know, we've given enough money to Republican candidates that we kinda feel like that somebody's biting our hand off as we extend the hand of fellowship and the hand with checks in it for their candidates. So he indicated he was going to look into it and see if he couldn't bring it to a halt.
