No Joy this Season

Commentators are finding little joy in the Iraq Study Group’s report, just submitted to the President.
John McCain says it’s “a receipt for defeat.” A Republican congressman from Georgia, Jack Kingston, said that, “It’s about as daring as a glass of warm water.”
Pat Buchanan selected a few excerpts that make the report look silly:
“The situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating,” the group writes. Then it goes on and talks about “a slide toward chaos” that could trigger a “catastrophe.”
“This is the portrait of a nation descending into hell,” Pat writes.
The report is commendably frank in declaring the obvious difficulty we find ourselves in, but then puts forth recommendations that don’t square with the harsh reality of the situation.
The main recommendation is to pull out our troops by early 2008. But what then? Since we, with our modern technology and 150,000 troops haven’t been able to squelch the insurgents how can the rag-tag Iraqi army be expected to do it?
Buchanan quotes the report: The Iraqi army has made “fitful progress toward becoming a reliable and disciplined fighting force loyal to the national government.” And further, “units lack leadership. …Units lack equipment. …Units lack personnel. … Units lack logistics and support.”
Rush Limbaugh and others are referring to the ISG as the Iraq Surrender Group.
Missing from all this harsh criticism, though, is any suggestion of what, exactly, we should do. Beyond the useless “stay the course” mantra we hear nothing.
