WELL, I'M SURE THIS DID A LOT FOR THE IMAGE OF JEWS IN SEATTLE
First, thanks to the 500+ people who emailed me the information on this outrage over the weekend. This serves to illustrate just how mad this made people.
For the past 10 years the Sea-Tac airport, serving Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, has put up about 15 Christmas trees during the Christmas season. This year an orthodox rabbi decided that there was an opportunity to get a little publicity and perhaps make a name for himself. Well, he succeeded. He certainly made a name for himself, but it probably isn't one he will want inscribed on his tombstone.
The rabbi decided that since there were Christmas trees at Sea-Tac, he wanted a menorah. What's more, he wanted a public lighting ceremony for the menorah. He apparently made his appeal to the Sea-Tac airport management in the form of an "either-or" demand. Either give me my menorah, or take down the Christmas trees. You've got two days. The airport management decided that it had better things to do during this busy holiday season, so they took down the trees to make the rabbi go away.
Now ... let's sit and wait to see if other rabbis and members of the Seattle Jewish community step forward to denounce this character. He certainly hasn't done anything to foster warm and fuzzy feelings between those celebrating Christmas and Hanukah this year.
What a putz.
