Democrats Acting Shamelessly

By Gary Palmer

Palmer Posted on: November 10, 2005

At the same time Democrats in the United States Senate are calling for a special investigation into the intelligence information provided to Congress to justify taking the war against terrorism into Iraq, Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, declared that the nation of Israel should be "wiped off the map."

At the same time that Minority Leader Harry Reid is calling President George W. Bush a liar, the suburbs of Paris are burning after almost two weeks of rioting by Islamic fanatics.

At the same time that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was helping undermine the public's support for the war against terrorism, an Islamic group was apprehended in Holland for plotting to assassinate Dutch politicians who support restricting Muslim immigration. And, in Denmark, a number of young Islamic fanatics were arrested and charged with plotting suicide attacks there and throughout Europe.

And at the same time that former President Jimmy Carter was criticizing our efforts to fight the terrorists in Iraq and establish the region's first Islamic nation with its own constitution and democratically elected government, Islamic terrorist's bombs killed innocent men, women, and children in Israel, India, and Indonesia.

While Democrats and the liberal media are undermining the American public's will to fight by initiating a disingenuous political attack against the Bush Administration, fanatical Islamists are killing and maiming from one end of the globe to the other.

It is disingenuous because the substance of what the Democrats say they are looking for has already been covered in at least four investigative reports including the two by Congress that were released in the last 16 months: the July 2004 report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, which was approved unanimously, and the March 2005 report from the bipartisan Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction.

The March report specifically found "no indication that the Intelligence Community distorted the evidence regarding Iraq's weapons of mass destruction," nor did they find any evidence that the Intelligence Community made or changed "…any analytic judgments in response to political pressure to reach a particular conclusion."

Based on the fact that the claims of intelligence information being manipulated to mislead the U.S. into the war in Iraq has been thoroughly investigated and refuted by at least four different investigative groups lead one to the conclusion that the Democrat attacks against the Bush Administration have little to do with anything other than the fact that the Democrats are the minority party and there is an election in 2006. And it appears that they are perfectly willing to endanger American troops and American interests by undermining the war effort if it will help them regain control of Congress.

Support for the war is already at a depressingly low percentage. Despite fighting a multi-front war that includes Afghanistan and Iraq, our forces have defeated and destroyed two radical regimes and freed 50 million people. In just a matter of weeks the men and women of Iraq will be the first Islamic nation in the Middle East, under their own constitution, to hold a legitimate election for their own government. And they will go to the polls despite the fact that Islamic fanatics are threatening to kill anyone that votes. These attacks will be as deadly and vicious as possible, because the terrorists know every attack will further undermine America's support of the fledgling Iraqi democracy.

All this has been accomplished in three years and at the loss of slightly more than 2,000 American soldiers, an incredibly low number of casualties for what has been achieved.

But liberals know that the criticism of the rationale for the war in Iraq, regardless of how successful we have been, exploits a fundamental weakness in that Americans are conditioned for quick and painless solutions. Most of the public's perception of warfare is a creation of Hollywood where everything works the first time and the whole thing is over in a couple of hours.

But in warfare, it is rare that anything goes as exactly as planned the first time or any time. Aside from the fact that the enemy does not follow a Hollywood script, there are always mistakes in fighting a war. There have been major miscalculations in every war America has ever fought and there always will be because warfare is chaotic. Iraq is no exception. This does not mean that bad intelligence or poor performance should be overlooked. It means the time to have an open discussion to critique the effort is after the enemy is defeated so as not to aid or encourage him. To do so will only add to the number of dead and wounded Americans.

So while Democrats and the liberal media undermine support for the war in Iraq, Islamic fanatics are encouraged to increase their attacks against Westerners worldwide; Paris is burning and the rest of Europe is under threat. Yet in Iraq, Muslim men and women are building something new, an Islamic democracy.

At this critical moment, just weeks before the Iraqi election, even though American soldiers and Iraqi citizens are putting their lives on the line, Democrat leaders in Congress have chosen to shamefully engage in an act of political sabotage.
