The Color of Crime

Former U. S. Secretary of Education, William Bennett, has recently been in the news for his attempt to show that the moral case against abortion outweighs bizarre pragmatic cases for abortion. In doing this he used as an example of bizarre pragmatism the possibility that the crime rate would be reduced if more black babies were aborted. He was by no means suggesting this as a solution to crime. He was only showing that many pragmatic arguments for abortion on a society level were often themselves immoral and bizarre.
It is a fact that black crime rates are considerably higher than white crime rates. It was perhaps not the wisest example for Bennett to use in view of mainstream media’s PC hysteria about race issues. However, the media’s extreme reluctance to publish such statistics and even to actively suppress candid discussion of such racial issues is a public disservice. It makes rational analysis and discussion of social problems impossible, thereby hindering logical conclusions and remedies.
The statistics on race and crime are alarming, and they constitute an American dilemma.
The 2005 updating and republication of Jared Taylor’s, The Color of Crime, indicates the severity of the problem:
- Blacks are just 13 percent of the population but they commit more than 50 percent of the violent crimes. Latinos commit violent crimes at about three times the white rate.
- The proportion of blacks and Latinos in an area is the single best indicator of how dangerous it is. The racial mix is a much better predictor than poverty, unemployment, or educational dropout rates combined.
- A black is about 39 times more likely to do violence to a white than the other way around. Blacks are 130 times more likely to rob a white than the reverse. The vast majority of hate crimes are actually black against white rather than the relatively infrequent cases of white against black, which the media prefer to report.
- The common opinion about the danger of rape is not prejudice; it is reality.
Every year there are about 15,000 black-on-white rapes, but fewer than 900 white-on-black rapes. Each year there are 3,000 gang rapes of whites by blacks and too few white gang rapes of blacks to show up in the statistics.
- On the other hand, Asians are much less likely to commit these kinds of violent crimes than whites.
These are indeed alarming statistics, but suppressing the truth never solves problems.
Suppression of truth multiplies problems and false solutions. In the last 140 years more than a trillion dollars has been spent on poverty and educational programs with little if any results. In truth, all the compensatory poverty and education programs and many anti-discrimination laws may have actually contributed to the problem. What is the solution? We need to start by facing reality and allowing research, analysis, and discussion to take place absent PC hysteria and agendas.
I suspect the high black crime rate has multiple causes, and that the usual suspects of racism, poverty, and fewer educational opportunities have contributed far less to the problem than generally believed. These issues get much media attention and are favorites of politicians seeking to prove their own righteousness by offering yet more government programs no matter how costly and ineffective or even counterproductive and harmful. I suspect that real and lasting remedies will not come in the form of more government programs, coercion, and self-righteous political posturing and pandering.
I do not purport to have a total solution to crime or to have a definitive analysis of race and crime. Nor do I even dream that mankind has the capacity to fully understand or solve these problems. I do know that the problems were once less severe. That was before Judeo-Christian values were thrown out of government and our schools. That was before we looked to big government as the solution to everything. That was before the arrogant and self-righteous virus of political correctitude infected every aspect of society.
