Islam, a Religion of Peace-- or of Violence?

Instantly after the atrocities of 9/11 our president George Bush sought out the head imam in Washington. He took the podium with him to proclaim, and to ensure one and all, that "Islam is a religion of peace." The suicidal criminals who flew the airplanes into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, you see, were just a handful of deviants, sometimes called "fundamentalists" Muslims. They had nothing at all to do with the mainstream of Islam. This is the message that we continue to hear day after day, even now more than three years later.
A religion of peace? Just yesterday there appeared a small article buried on an inside page of the paper that told the story of a man in Afghanistan on trial for converting to Christianity. According to the AP dispatch from Kabul, "senior Muslim clerics" demanded that he "be executed."
Let's go over that again. The "clerics" of this religion, and the "senior" clerics at that, are demanding death to a man because he has become a Christian. This is shocking to the point of disbelief, but these clerics are doing nothing but faithfully following the dictates of their religion. They are not marginal characters who have strayed from the original intent of Mohammad or the Koran. On the contrary they are faithful adherents.
The same clerics said that if the government frees this Christian in response to Western pressure that they will incite people to "pull him into pieces." The AP quoted one cleric by name. Abdul Raoulf said, "This man must die."
And, the AP added, Abdul Raoulf is "considered a moderate." Yes, a moderate. A "moderate" Muslim cleric wants to execute a man for becoming a Christian, yet Islam, we are told, is a "religion of peace."
What the president said is nonsense. Islam is no religion of peace. The suicide attackers of 9/11 were just being "good" Muslims and carrying out the mandate of the Prophet as recorded in the Koran-- the mandate to kill the infidels.
Our president is grievously mistaken. Islam is not a religion of peace, but a religion of violence.
