Animal Activsts Exploit Shark Attack on Arbogast

By Brad Taylor

Taylor Posted on: September 3, 2001

A left-wing animal rights group plans to exploit the recent shark attack on Jessie Arbogast. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an extremist group that opposes fishing, plans to place billboard ads in Pensacola, Florida that say, "Would you give your right arm to know why sharks attack? Could it be revenge?"

PETA officials admit they are willing to risk offending people to further its agenda to convert the world to vegetarianism. Their philosophy is when a situation deals with what they claim is "animal cruelty," they will do "some outlandish things." Their material states, "Recent shark attacks have taken a bite out of summer fun, but the most dangerous predators of all come out of the water and up onto the beach and line up at the "all-you-can-eat" seafood buffets." Look out America, because PETA has now branded you as the most dangerous pedators!

Fortunately, the billboard company, Prime Outdoor, refused to display the ad after considering the possible public backlash. PETA is reportedly looking for another billboard company willing to run the ad.

PETA has also had airplane-towed banners above the beaches that said, "Dangerous predators in water now…you?" Clearly, this organization is trying to exploit the media frenzy in general in addition to the tragedy of Jessie's attack.

A shark bit off 8-year-old Jessie's right arm at a beach near Pensacola. While his arm was reattached, the boy remains in a light coma and faces a long and uncertain recovery. PETA has shown itself as an extremist organization by taking advantage of a little boy who must struggle to regain his life.
